Writers interested in Science Fiction

Writers interested in Science Fiction

BLOG SESSION
July 2017

Good Evening Writers ~ We are back for more about writing Science Fiction.

Top Tips on writing Science Fiction

  • Read lots of science fiction.  As with any kind of writing, the best way to learn how to do it is to read it.  Classic science fiction writers include H.G. Wells, Ray Bradbury, and Arthur C. Clarke.  You probably have your favorite science fiction writers if you read a lot of science fiction Novels.

  • Do your homework.  Learn about the real science and technology that is related to the imaginary world you are creating.

  • Create an ordered universe.  Figure out the rules of your imaginary worlds ahead of time, and follow those rules consistently.

  • Make it feel real.  You are inviting readers to visit an alternate reality.  They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it's like.  Whether your Novel's about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet in another galaxy, help your readers feel like they're actually there.  Read up on how you can use specific detail to make your writing come to life.

Become your Character

When you think about your Character, you must learn how to become your Character.  Feel the feelings that your main character is feeling.  If your main character has any specific personality quirks, make sure that you research those quirks.  What if your main character had an issue about certain color lights.  What if your main character could not walk to the right, only to the left.  Maybe your main character has issues with pronouncing certain words.  Get into the inner workings of your character.  Maybe your character has childhood issues that were never resolved.  Whatever the case may be, just really make sure that the reader can feel your character to the point of having empathy when and where needed.

If you need to, get images that will help you to actually visualize the places in your Novel.  If you are artistic, draw your scenes out to help you to embody your Novel.

The most important tip for all Writers who are writing Science Fiction ~ Use your imagination to the fullest!

Take your Reader on a Journey

Here are some basic ideas for Science Fiction Novels:

  • Imagine the world in the future.

  • Imagine the end of the world.

  • Imagine that an actual important historical event had gone differently.

  • Think of an existing technology, then imagine what would happen if it were taken much further.

  • Imagine a new invention that would change the world.

  • Imagine that time travel is possible.

  • Imagine life on another planet.

  • Imagine a new species of super-humans.

  • Imagine extraterrestrials coming to earth.

  • Change an existing law of the universe.

  • Image Artificial Intelligence gone awry.

Final Tip for Today:  Think way ~ way ~ outside of the box.  Give your Science Fiction Novel a jolt by using your imagination like never before.  Amazing things happen when you write outside of reality as we think it to be.

Take a Journey outside of your mind then write.

Until our next Blog Session friends ~

Peace, Love & Light,

René

Writers Working on Novels

BLOG SESSION

Writers Working on Novels

Welcome back from our Coffee Break.  We are discussing writing our Novels and working on our Writing Projects during the month of July online in Camp NaNoWriMo.

If you are new to our Blog, we want you to know that you are welcome here.  You're able to leave your thoughts and comments here on the Blog in the "Comments Section" at the bottom of this Blog.  You can also Bookmark our Blog, and "Follow by Email" by entering your Email address in the upper right-hand column underneath my eyeball where it says, "Follow by Email".  Once you have entered in your Email Address, just click the "Submit" button.  You'll receive all Blog Sessions as they are posted in your Email box, even if you are not able to be online.

For all readers here who have already signed up for the July Camp NaNoWriMo session online, then you have already entered in your information, and have been working on your Novel or other Writing Project.  You've also either joined a Cabin with other Writers, or started your own Cabin.  Your Cabin can either be private or open to other Writers.

If you have not yet signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo, you should definitely sign up so that you can try your hand at finally writing your Novel, or working on a new Novel.  You can also work on whatsoever else you like, like a Writing Project, or a Research Project, or a Memoir, or a Poetry Book, or a Writing Project that is special to you.  Just click on the link to sign up, or sign in if you have already joined Camp NaNoWriMo.

You'll have the entire month of July to write your Novel consisting of 50,000 words or more.  This month has 31 days, and you have plenty of time to get started.  I've participated in camp NaNo in 2012 during the months of June and August, completing two winning Novels:  "Grey Mists" and "SARAHVILLE".  In July of 2016, I participated in Camp NaNoWriMo starting on a Novel entitled, "The Full Metal Life" that I plan to work on further and complete in November 2017 during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

If you are interested in writing a Novel this year in November, then you may want to check out NaNoWriMo.org to sign up and get familiar with the Site.  Writing starts on November 1st, 2017.

Some Writers write more than one Novel in a month during the month of November, and I just may do the same this year barring any unexpected interruptions.  We all know how things just kinda jump in the way of your plans.  But, I'm determined to complete "The Full Metal Life" and another Novel which is a Novel in a series that I've already had published as a short story entitled, "HouseCapades".  In fact, I'll be sharing the Book Cover for HouseCapades that was designed by a Google friend who is an Artist.  Francine Langlois was kind enough to lend her artistic hand at coming up with sample Book Covers for HouseCapades, and are they ever beautiful!

Speaking of Book Covers, you'll want to design your Book Cover for your Novel that you are working on for Camp NaNoWriMo if you have not done so already.  Here is my Book Cover for "And, yet I say, I SEE." ...

At the top of this Blog, you'll see a Journal that I'm using for my Novel Notes for the Novel I'm working on this month for Camp.  In our last Blog Session, we discussed a few steps for designing your Novel for Camp.  There was also a suggestion made for you to write down your Novel Notes in a Journal so that you do not forget important items that are needful for your story.  Your Journal for your Novel Notes should be personal to you, and will look the way you want it to so that it will inspire you to write your Novel.

Another way you can keep up with your ideas for your Novel is to use a tape recorder, or your cell phone Sound Recorder to speak your thoughts as they come to you.

Other Tips:  Take pictures with your cell phone on the go of images that are useful for your Novel.  Read Novels to get your writing juices flowing.  Research Publishers to get your mind focused on what comes next after you have completed your Novel.  Talk with other Novelists, Writers and Authors so you may have a better idea of what to expect if you are a beginner.  Get involved in Writers Forums, Writers Groups, and Book Clubs.

Check out Camp NaNoWriMo for other helpful tips.  Here is a link that you can read this weekend from The NaNoWriMo Blog . . .

Ask a Published Author: “How much research do I have to do for my novel?
