Journal Note Taking Time!

How to Write an effective Diary

First off, you need to consider what type of Diary you wish to have.  Consider the type of things that you want to write about on a daily basis.  You may want to have several Diaries for your different moods and preferences.

For personal Diaries (for your eyes only), you will definitely want a Diary with a key and a lock.  It makes for a more therapeutic Diary experience ~ in your mind and soul picture your inner world, your inner thoughts, and the benefits of discovering more about yourself for your "self".  It is the Diary that is written by you for YOU...(and only you).

Diary with Key and Lock

Diaries are for both men and women, and for people of all ages.  These are some of the factors that you should take into account before you purchase your Diary:

1)  Consider your writing style.  Are you more of a reflective writer?  Do you write from the place of your "feelings"?  Do you write from the standpoint of how you are perceiving your outer world and the people around you?  Do you write from the mind of a story-teller?  Just think about some of these points in relation to the type of Diary that fits you.

2)  Consider your personal preferences ~ What type of Diary fits you?  Do you want a decorative Diary?  Are you a creative person?  Would you like to use your artistic skills and create a cover for your Diary that is personal to you, and unique to your personality?

3)  Before you purchase your Diary, have in mind what type of Diary you want.  Once you have purchased your Diary, keep in mind WHY you purchased it.  If you purchase your Diary with the idea that you will learn more about your "self", then that will be your goal.  If you purchase your Diary to get your life in some type of assemblance of order, then that will be your goal.  If you purchase your Diary for healing so that you may get to the root of your "anger", "resentment", an/or "unforgiveness" issues, then that will be your goal.  If you purchase your Diary to find out what skills and talents are latent within you that you'd like to capitalize on, then that will be your goal.  You get the picture -- know what you are aiming for when you purchase your Diary.

4)  What type of handwriting do you have?  Do you write large, small or somewhere inbetween?  Do you write in cursive, or do you like to print?
       a.  If you have small, neat handwriting, then you may want to purchase a Diary that has smaller line spaces and smaller margins.
       b.  If you have handwriting that is large and/or messy, then you may want to purchase a Diary that has larger line spaces and larger margins.
        c.  If you like colored pages, then that is the type of Diary that you should look for.
        d.  Maybe you like no lines in your Diary so that you can free-style when you write.  You may want to add in little drawings, sketches, or photographs in your Diary, so white paper and no lines may be ideal for your choice of selection.
        e)  How durable would you like your Diary to be?  A Moleskin Diary may work well for you if you are looking for durability.  Diaries range from expensive to inexpensive, it just depends on what suits you and what type of Diary you are attracted to.
         f)  Your Diary should be exciting to you, because you want to make the most out of your Diary experience, so do keep that in mind when you go to purchase your Diary.
         g)  Do you plan to carry your Diary around with you every day, or leave it at home and write in it only at night?  If you plan to carry your Diary around with you, then you may seek to do that because you like to capture your day-to-day observations.  If that is the case, you may want to carry a smaller Diary around with you that will fit in your briefcase, tote bag, purse, or pocket.
         h)  Remember, if you are a firm believer in privacy, then your Diary must have a lock and key, but just bear in mind that some Diaries with locks and keys are flimsy, and are easily broken.
          i)  Keep in mind there are free Websites that allow you to keep a Diary online.  This is the perfect solution for those of you who prefer typing over writing by hand in your Diary.  Many Authors and Writers love typing!  In this case, you can keep and have your Diary available to you by desk-top computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone.  One benefit to the online Diary is that it is always available to you, and it takes up no space, and you do not have to keep up with your Diary, you always know it is online.  This works well for people who are always misplacing their personal items -- hope that's not you (smiles).  [Please NOTE:  If privacy is an issue for you, an online Diary is never 100% safe and secure online.  Even if your online Diary is password protected, there is no guarantee that your Diary will be safe online and absolutely private.  Nothing online is really secure.  Someone could possibly stumble upon your Diary online and gain access to your personal and private Diary information.]  Not trying to scare you out of an online Diary, just making sure you are aware.  An online Diary for you may be better if it is the type of Diary that you do not care if anyone discovers it.  There are OPEN Diaries online where other people are allowed to read them, and you can opt for that type of online Diary.  If that is what you'd like, then that is also available to you].
            j)  Storage of your Diary:  Decide where you'd like to store your Diary.  If you want to keep your Diary private, find a discreet and private place in your home to store your Diary.  Consider hiding it in a place where no one would look.  Many people put their Diaries in obvious places, like under their mattress, or in a night stand drawer.  For privacy, put your Diary where people in your home are unlikely to poke around and be nosey.  If you are concerned or worried about privacy, keep your Diary in an easy-to-reach place (yet not easy to figure out for others) close to your desk, bed, or wherever you plan to write in your Diary.
