Selection of your Dowels
for your Personal & Unique Scroll
BLOG SESSION
August 6th, 2017
Good Afternoon Friends, Writers, Authors, Artists, Poets, and Scroll Makers!
We're back to continue our discussion about creating our unique and personal Scrolls. We are going to talk about the selection of your Dowels for your personal and unique Scroll.
If you do not know what a "dowel" is in relation to your Scroll creation, here is the background information that you will need to add to your Journal...
Journal Notes
For your unique and personal Scroll, you will need to think about every detail of your Scroll as you create something that will be very special both to you and for you.
First off, you will need to think about your Dowels for your Scroll creations. You will need to select Dowels for each of the Scrolls that you create. The design of the dowels that you choose is completely up to you.
For your Journal Notes: Dowels are the sticks that you sometimes see at the end of Scrolls that make them easier to roll and unroll. You can purchase craft sticks from your local craft store to make your dowels as well. You can cut them to the width of your paper. You will need two (2) Dowels for each Scroll that you create. The two (s) Dowels will be placed at each end of your Scroll.
For smaller Scrolls, you can use chopsticks, which can easily be glued down at each end of your Scroll.
You can decorate the ends of your Dowels using ribbon or dowel caps. You can purchase your choice of ribbon and/or dowel caps at your local craft store.
Remember to secure your Scroll Decorations and embellishments with hot glue so that they do not come apart.
Here are a few scroll dowel designs for you to view and keep in mind as you begin to get ready to decide which type of dowel you will use for your Scroll . . .

Dowels for your Scrolls
NOTE: You will need one (1) Dowel at each end of your Scroll.
Your Scroll will of course be unique to you, and you will choose items for your Scroll that fit your personality. Of course, you will choose colors that you like, (inks, paints, colored pencils). You will also choose the paper style that you like (aged or not; colored or not; distressed edges or not). You will also choose the style of Dowel that is pleasing to your eye. As you look at some of the Dowel Styles above, as well as online, and at craft stores, you will notice that dowels come in different sizes, colors, and elements (wood, metal, plastic).
If you take another look at the Dowel that is attached to the Scroll at the top of this Blog, (SEE the same Dowel/Scroll below), you will notice a very unique design and beautiful style. You will also notice the large size of the Dowel and the ancient look of the Dowel immediately . . .
Uniquely Designed Scroll
You'll be the one to decide which of the various styles of dowels you would like to have for your own personal Scroll. There is also a hanger styled dowel that may interest you for your personal Scroll...

For Smaller Scroll Creations and smaller dowels:
1) Glue or tape the dowels to the ends of your paper. Lay your scroll on a flat surface. If you have writing or any artistic designs on your Scroll, the writing/art designs should be face up before attaching your dowels to each end. Place one dowel on the right end of your scroll, another on the left end. Make sure the side with the writing is facing up. Wrap the edge of the paper inward around each dowel, so that the dowel is covered. Secure the dowel with hot glue or tape.
2) Next, roll up your scroll. After the glue has dried, roll each side of the scroll around its dowel so that the two sides meet in the middle. If you are not using dowels, simply roll up your scroll from one end to the other, paper towel style, making sure the writing is on the inside.
3) Secure your Scroll with string or ribbon. Select a piece of string, yarn, or ribbon, and tie it around your Scroll. This is optional, but it can add a nice touch while keeping your scroll secure.
